Twenty Twenty Vision - Delving into Data 36: University Towns & Cities

A recent article by Business Insider highlighted some of the cheapest university cities for students in the UK. With A-Level results recently released we took the opportunity to look into three of the cheapest listed areas to examine their property market statistics further. The three cities that we are going to look at using TwentyCi’s Homemover Data are Coventry (Coventry University), Birmingham (Aston University) and Stoke-On-Trent (Keele University) which are ranked 8th, 10th and 11th respectively. The rankings in the article were based on student expenses with specific aspects such as weekly rent, taxi fares and gym membership examined. For this edition, we're going to look at the cost to purchase in those towns, perhaps as a buy-to-let opportunity, and then the average rental prices based on a monthly rental amount.

On the Market Properties

  • The average asking price for a property in Coventry is £292,615 and the average time that a property is on the market for is 104 days before the property is either bought or withdrawn from the market. The main Coventry University campus is in the centre of Coventry.
  • The average asking price for a property in Birmingham is £265,897 and the average time that a property is on the market for is 113 days. The Aston University main campus is in the centre of Birmingham.
  • The average asking price for a property in Stoke-on-Trent is £210,211 and the average time that a property is on the market for is 127 days. The main Keele University campus is 4.4 Miles or 11 Minutes’ drive away from the Stoke-On-Trent city centre.

Stoke-on-Trent is the best priced city of the three with an average asking price of £210,211. Birmingham is slightly higher priced with an average asking price of £265,897, and Coventry is the highest priced city with an average asking price of £292,615.

Rental Market Properties

  • The average asking price for a rental property in Coventry is £1,058 per calendar month (pcm) and the average time that a property is on the market for before being let or withdrawn is 132 days.
  • The average asking price for a rental property in Birmingham is £733 pcm and the average time that a property is on the market for is 135 days.
  • The average asking price for a rental property in Stoke-on-Trent is £561 pcm and the average time that a property is on the market for is 86 days.

Like the On the Market Properties, Stoke-on-Trent is the best priced of the three cities with an average rental price of £561 pcm. Birmingham is slightly higher priced with an average rental asking price of £733 pcm and again, Coventry is the highest priced city with an average rental asking price of £1,058 pcm.
